Since the New Year, the Russian government limits the export of birch logs, which is used to produce plywood. This measure will support Russian processing plants.

Restrictions on the export of birch or plywood logs will be valid from January 1 to June 30, 2018. The decree that introduces this innovation was developed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. According to the document, in the first half of the year it will be possible to take out 567 thousand m3 of birch logs from the country, and after removal of the restriction another 600 thousand m3. Thus, the total export of birch logs in 2018 will be approximately 1.3 million m3 versus more than 1.9 million m3 in 2016, according to market participants. The Ministry of Industry and Trade will distribute quotas between market participants and issue one-time licenses for export.

According to the ministry, the consumption of birch logs in Russia from 2015 to 2017 increased from 9.7 million m3 to 10.7 million m3, and by 2021 could increase to 13.4 million m3. The export grows respectively. So, in 2015 it was 1.5 million m3, in 2016 - 1.9 million m3, and in 2017 - 2.3 million m3. Without restrictive measures, 2.8 million m3 of birch logs could be exported from Russia this Year.
